Baie de Tareste

Tareste Bay is an open bay on the northeastern coast of Hiiumaa island, Estonia. It lies between Kärdla Harbour and the Tõrvanina Peninsula; in a broader sense, it refers to the sea area between Lehtma and Hiiesaare. Tareste Bay is a popular area among visitors for sunbathing and swimming, camping, hiking, and windsurfing, thanks to its open coastline, shallow waters, and spacious natural setting.

The Tõrvanina nature trail runs through the varied landscape of the Tareste Landscape Protection Area. The trail is marked with red waymarks, is 4 km long, and passes through diverse forest communities. Along the route you can see small salt pools, sand dunes, Tareste Bay and its reed beds, as well as military remains from World War II. Information boards along the trail introduce local plant species and the birdlife of Tareste Bay. The trail passes through habitats of protected plant species and bat roosting areas. In the second half of summer and in autumn, it is worth bringing a berry or mushroom basket: blueberries and lingonberries grow along the trail, and common mushrooms include russulas, milkcaps, and boletes.
