General information about Sine Saloum

150 km south of Dakar, Sine Saloum Bay is located in the South West Region of Fatik, Senegal. This large fluvial-maritime nature reserve (730 km²) consists of three key areas: continental, which is a transition area between mangroves and salted lands, alternating landscape, clear forests, scrub savannah and farming area; insular, with territories divided by firths filled with mangroves; and maritime, with an ecosystem ideal for aquaculture, which is a great habitat for marine mammals such as whales and manatees, mollusks, shellfishes and turtles.

However, this important economic potential is challenged by different problems: tree felling and bush fires; drought and water salification; protected marine species poaching and coastal erosion.
